viola and violin on etude books lessons in East Lansing Okemos

I am an instructor of violin and viola residing in Annapolis, and have been teaching for more than a decade.  I am currently on the Suzuki faculty at the Levine School in Washington, DC.  I also maintain a private studio in Annapolis.

I started my pedagogical studies with with Brenda Brenner and Mimi Zweig at Indiana University, and continued with Janet Jensen at the University of Wisconsin.  Under their guidance I instructed students ranging in age from preschool to graduate school.  My Suzuki studies were with Wendy Azrak, Nancy Jackson, Rebecca Sandrok, and Ann Montzka-Smelser.  As a teacher at Okemos Suzuki in Michigan I started and led a group program for violists.

The Suzuki method emphasizes instruction tailored to the age and strengths of each child.  With the teacher and parent working as a team, young students are provided with an encouraging environment and constant feedback.  Development of foundational skills and sensitivity to sound quality are valued over maintaining a certain “pace” or rushing through the curriculum. Emphasis on daily effort and steady progress allows students to feel accomplished and to progress at their own speed.

The “Suzuki” vs. “traditional” dichotomy is a bit of a misnomer. The Suzuki Method was introduced in the United States in 1964 and has become quite popular, so that however a player was initially instructed, today almost every string player has been influenced by the Suzuki training of their teachers, peers, or colleagues. Music is largely an oral tradition passed down from teacher to student, and Suzuki is but one part of a very rich string heritage in our country.

I believe the key to motivating students of any age is giving them the tools they need to overcome obstacles. A big part of this is taking small steps that set a beginning student up for success. Approaching teaching and home practice time as problem-solving gives students a sense of confidence and direction.
